In 1959 President Dwight D. Eisenhower visited eleven countries on three continents in order to strengthen the ties binding the nations of the Free World. President Eisenhower felt "there is no substitute for personal contact in furthering understanding and good will."〔Johns Hopkins University Press. The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower, The Presidency: Keeping the Peace XX. Document 1382.〕 The tour spanned 22,000 miles and twenty days from December 3 to December 22, 1959.
